WiMax and 3G in Bangladesh

In a recent talk show, the chairman of BTRC ( Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) Major General Manjurul Alam (Rtd) has said that WiMax and 3g license will be issued in Bangladesh soon. The WiMax license will be issued within 3/4 months and in the mean time Ericsson and Huwei will be given a trial license(for 3 months period). 3G license will be issued at the end of this year. The BTRC chairman also said that the deployment of WiMax in Bangladesh will bring some revolutionary changes in the telecommunication sector although it will cost a high price to be deployed. The chairman also discussed on some technical advantages WiMax and 3G will provide. The revenue from this sector has increased a lot and he expects that with the current trend the scope is further high. Mr. Manjur also mentioned that the alternate Optical Fiber Link which is due to connect us to the SEA-WE-ME 4, will introduce competition with the current link ensuring drop in the connectivity price. Thus people will be able to get bandwidth with much cheaper price and ofcourse with higher data speed.

  1. After a long time… Its really a good decision from BTRC about WIMAX and 3G. both of them r very necessary for BD. I wish 3G and Wimax will bring a good result for us.

    Thank you

  2. The need for a high-speed, accessible network is paramount in Bangladesh and has been for a very long time, not only is it important to have this long-awaited infrastructure, but the content available on it must also be addressed, WICTEC have been researching high-speed broadband networks, and content management systems, as well as many other strategies that are a major necessity.

  3. Wimax launching will bring a revolutionary change in Bangladesh telecom sector that needs no telling. But it’s a matter of headache for our middle class family users to bear its expenses. So my request to BTRC chairman is please fix up comparatively low rate in case of use.

  4. Wimax Technology is very helpful for internet user. Its installation cost is very low & more faster than EDGE. So I want this technology as early a possible. So my request to BTRC chairman please give WiMAX licence as early a possible.

  5. i’v’nt enough idea about wimax there after i wanna say that it’s very important for the impression of network side of bangladesh. So bangladesh govt must give the approval of wimax………`

  6. Wimax launching will bring a revolutionary change in Bangladesh telecom sector that needs no telling.

In an emergency, communication is crucial for government officials as they try to determine the cause of the problem, find out who may be injured and coordinate rescue efforts or cleanup operations. A gas-line explosion or terrorist attack could sever the cables that connect leaders and officials with their vital information networks.
WiMAX could be used to set up a back-up (or even primary) communications system that would be difficult to destroy with a single, pinpoint attack. A cluster of WiMAX transmitters would be set up in range of a key command center but as far from each other as possible. Each transmitter would be in a bunker hardened against bombs and other attacks. No single attack could destroy all of the transmitters, so the officials in the command center would remain in communication at all times.
So my request to BTRC chairman is please give Wimax license as early as possible.

  7. WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. WiMAX allows a user, for example, to browse the Internet on a laptop computer without physically connecting the laptop to a router, hub or switch via an Ethernet cable.

  8. Broaband penetration has a remarkable impact on GDP growth. Wimax is the most cost efective technology to improve broadband penetration. So my request to BTRC to issue the license in earliest possible time.

  10. it will be very good if we get wiMAX and 3G in Bangladesh. but I think video calling should not be allowed to subscribers as our young generation will misuse the Technology.

  11. Our desire about wi-max that it will not be a time consuming procedure. It cost should be reasonable that’s why poor people can use it.

  12. I am very much happy to know that we are going to connected with 2 modern technology.
one of them is 3G and another one is WiMax.
i love to get it as quick as possible

  13. A feature to consider with wimax is that available bandwidth is shared among users in a given radio sector, so if there are many active users in a single sector, each will get reduced bandwidth. A commom problem in our country. Government regulation is required to limit service providers bandwidth distibution in a given radio sector.

  14. This is our pleasure to know that BTRC has issued Broadband Wireless Access Licence(Wimax) to three bangladeshi ISP operators after an open auction on 24th September 2008. The companies are Bangla Lion, Orgere, and Brac BDmail. However though it is told that the license is issued to the local operators, every one having the major foreign investors…BTRC policy is food as it will allow voice and data both through Wimax network while prediction on india will restrict the use of voice through it.

Hopefully it will work out fine with in 3 years in every corner of the country…

  15. bangladesh will have 3G? hahahhahahaah
how about india?if india doesn’t have 3G.then howcome bangladesh will have?
can any mobile operators like aktel, grameen(bullshit) spend 375 million dollars for 3G licensce.
dubai brought 3G in 2004 april now they are using 3.75G services so as saudi arabia.
rich country like them can afford for 3G,
i will bring 4G soon in BD in 2011.

  16. It is a very good decision. My heartest congratulation to them who think first about that.

This world is going faster, in the mean time we are very back dated. Communication makes the nation faster. Still we are back dated in communication. It can be think different way, not only in telecommunication!!!

    Keep continue …..

  17. At last,I hope that Augere would fulfil our expectation to a great extent by launching wimax as early as possible at a comparatively endurable rate in bangladesh.I wish their success in deployment of this new, highly worldwide-acclaimed product in bangladesh.

  18. I am very much happy to know that we are going to connected with 2 modern technology.
one of them is 3G and another one is WiMax. I love to get it as quick as possible. moreover it will increase job sector for telecommunication related students as well as idle manpower in Bangladesh. as a Bangladeshi I want to take the opportunity in order to become self-employed and be a part of developing IT field in BD. furthermore, Im very interested about Wimax and wanna build my carrier in this sector, can any one give me suggestion and advice how to reach my destination.

  19. Wimax and 3G will have a great positive impact on the telecom and internet infrastructure of Bangladesh, consumers/clients here and the country as a whole.

BTRA led by General Manzur and his very professional team has worked wonders and balanced the interests of the country, the consumers and the operators. He has come down hard on illegal operators and given licenses in new areas which was being milked illegally where the interest of only a few was served at the expense of the country and the consumers.

This only goes to show that we Bangladeshis can focus and work wonders if we are able to operate in a neutral envornment.

Gen Manzur may you and your team live long and continue to give the country and it’s consumers the best that we deserve.

  20. as salaamu alaikum

here u go bangladesh, WiMAX is in ur door step………!!!!!!!! BTRC has finally handed over the contract………… Im a Bio-stream student n i donno much about WiMAX n stuff………. But looking at all the fuzz its causing, it must be sumthing gt8………… I tried wikipedia n it jus gave me a whole lot of technical word which i don understand………. I wish i ws in BD at this moment to experience wut is really is…………. Maybe some of the smart ppl here can answer my question………….. Wuts the big deal abt WiMAX n why did some company give 215 crore for the lisence….? I donno, im jus happy that our country is slowly (but surely) developing………………
Oh ya, 1 more thing, how do ppl usually use WiMAX anyway? i heard it can be used on a mobile phones, laptops and desktops, it wireless rite?………… so doesnt it need any external device…….?

  21. it will be very nice if we get wimax technology.i am a student of economics so dont know more about networking.but a question please => how we get this service ?from mobile operator by using tower?like as gp blink.?without mobile operator?like radio?by using any sim card?or how?how we will get wimax network?is it come to ours bye using any old or new mobile network tower or sim card?if it is can teletalk give the wimax network?cause teletalk cant give gprs coverage at totall country.gp can but very high price n not suitable to using for a students.is there any opportunity to low costing for students to use wimax?dont mind for my question. thankx all. 23. Wi-Max is NOT getting that much of popularity here in the US. Only Sprint is working towards the technology. But, sprint is getting hammered recently by the fierce competition from Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Intel is heavily investing on Wi-Max and Sprint-Nextel is following the path. It might not be the right path as major carriers are not following. Currently, Verizon Wireless is leading the industry with the highest number of subscriber followed by AT& T. Sprint is the third carrier followed by T- Mobile. Both AT& T and T-Mobile are deploying 3G network (WCDMA) while Verizon followed 1xEV-DO (rev. A).

    AT &T and T-Mobile moved from GSM (2G) to WCDMA (3G) while Verizon moved from IS-95 (2G) to CDMA 2000 (1xEV-DO (rev. A) – 3G).

To get to the next level (4G), there are three options, 1) LTE (long term Evolution) 2) UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) 3) Wi-Max (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). UMB is being developed by Qualcomm but the company declared that it would not pursue for the development of the technology as all major operators (Verizon, AT& T and T-Mobile) in the US opted towards LTE solution for the 4G deployment. In fact, NTDoCoMo and emobile from Japan already started trial with LTE technology. Ericsson, Huawei and Alacatel-Lucent are major vendors eyeing to win major contracts from the US. Alacatel-Lucent already won the major contract from Verizon wireless and committed to start deploying 4G e-node (Base Station in 4G which will have RNC functionality built in) by 2009 in the US.

Bangladesh should focus on 3G deployment and I understand that major carriers in Bangladesh already opted towards 3G. It would be lot more cheaper by the time we start deploying 3G in Bangladesh. Moreover, we will have varieties of 3G phone (bug free) for 3G users. India already opted to go for 3G deployment with 2100 Mhz bandwidth. We should either go for 1900 or 2100 Mhz for our 3G network. But, we have to follow INDIA to be in compliant as vendors will definitely be looking for large number of production to keep the cost down which means will have better equipment in low price.

  24. Hi,
It’s a great news that we are getting touched with wimax in Bangladesh. But will this dream really come true for all?
I think it’ll not as it’ll cost a high amount! We want to see that every people of Bangladesh is using wimax. And for this, this is the 1st step. Hope the next step will be more hopeful for our vast population.
Wimax will give us a great speed in the internet. It’ll really help us to grow our internet business such as continuing web sites, blogs, forums easily.
When I’ve started my musical web forum, I was worried about the uploading. Now with wimax, I have not to hire any more foreigner for uploading!
It’ll really make a revolution in Bangladesh. But we must also think about the negative side of wimax.
Video conferencing facility should not be provided to the non-commercial connections, as our young boys and girls may make misuse of this!

    Thanks

  25. Dear All,

It is indeed a giant leap for a small country like ours. But all I want to say is every technology is a mixed blessing and please try to harness its good sides not the bad. So, before the tech is implemeted, how come you can say what service is to permit and what not. We were totally morons when we denied our free chance to connect with the internet super highway. Please don’t do this again. Appreciate it and use it sensibly… Good luck to coming 3G and Wimax services in our beloved country “BANGLADESH”

  26. we all will be very thankful. if we get the opportutinity to use wimax in our country.by the way i want to know that when wimax will be eshtablished?

  27. i wanna buy wimax internet conn. but i wanna know about this..so how can i get all info about this….any coustomer care number? plz mail me
